The main ingredient in our defense spray is a chemical called Oleoresin Capsicum(OC), a derivative of hot cayenne peppers. OC is pure and non-toxic. Unlike such irritants as tear gas, OC is an inflammatory agent. Contact with mucus membranes (eyes, nose, throat, and lungs) causes an immediate dilation of the capillaries of the eyes, resulting in temporary blindness and constricted breathing.
Defense sprays employing Oleoresin Capsicum have been used extensively by law-enforcement personnel and postal employees. Pepper Spray has proven to be safe and effective deterrent against all sorts of attackers, including those who are psychotic or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Pepper Spray is the single best non-lethal restraint yet discovered against attacking dogs and wild animals.
Sprays may also contain ultraviolet (UV) or other dyes, used by law-enforcement officials to identify criminals. Dye remains on the skin, even after repeated washings.
